Fewer works. More meaning.
Aravien adds an entry when it improves a path, not to inflate a number. The index is composed, not collected. Depth is the product.
Curation criteria
Three things have to be true before a work enters the index. It must be authored — there's a creator, a year, a region, and a verifiable provenance ID. It must carry editorial weight — it has to be in genuine conversation with at least one cultural line we're already tracking, and a curator has to be able to explain that line in a sentence. And it must have a reason to be here — improving a pathway, completing a regional field, opening a thread that other works can extend.
The third criterion is what makes the catalog small. We can resist adding a work even when it would be technically valid — a real release with real metadata — if no one can articulate what it carries forward.
What gets in
First-tier works in their domain, where 'first-tier' means the work has shaped the field rather than fitted into it. Films that taught other filmmakers how to film. Albums that opened tonal territories. Books that made other books possible. A long second tier of works that extend those firsts in a way the curator can defend in plain prose.
Across all media, the index sits at roughly 4,500 entries. That number is a target, not a milestone. We're not trying to grow it; we're trying to keep it accurate and arguable.
What doesn’t
Algorithmic surface — works that came up because a feed thought you'd like them. Viral content without depth. Derivatives that don't carry an authored argument. Works whose only claim to inclusion is recency or reach.
Aravien is small because the cultural field it tries to map is, in fact, small. Anyone telling you otherwise is selling you a dataset. We're trying to build something else.
The shape
Fewer works means the catalog can be held in one editor's head. It means a single person can verify a pathway end-to-end. It means cross-references stay legible — when work X mentions work Y, the reader can actually go look at work Y and see how the connection lands. It also means the surface stays calm. There is no infinite scroll. The page ends.
If the catalog ever doubles in size, it's because the field doubled — not because we got better at scraping.
