Editorial paths, not ranked lists
Each recommendation is reasoned: thematic continuation, cross-media resonance, regional depth. Not proximity scores. Actual editorial judgment about why one work follows another.
What a pathway is
A pathway in Aravien is a small set of works arranged around a single editorial argument. Each pathway has a thesis, a lead anchor, and an expansion of works that carry the thesis forward — across mediums, across decades, across regions. The expansion items are not ranked; they're chosen, and each carries a one-line reason explaining how it extends the anchor.
Tokyo noir, for instance, isn't a list of films set in Tokyo. It's a route through a particular cinematic line — urban threshold, nocturnal jazz, the moral weather of compressed modernity — that carries from Wong Kar-wai into Murakami into Mushishi. The works on the route aren't all there because they share a setting. They're there because they share an argument.
Why pathways instead of ranked lists
A list of “the ten best Korean films” answers a different question than “what film carries this thread further.” The list flattens; the path proposes. Aravien doesn't try to be the authoritative ranking — there are already plenty of those, and they all collapse the differences between works to a single number.
What we want is the argument: this thing, then this other thing, because. The list answers 'which is best.' The path answers 'where does this take you.' We're built around the second question because the first one is, in the end, less interesting.
How they connect
Pathways cross mediums by design. A pathway anchored in a film will surface a novel, a series, an album, an essay — not because the catalog has all of those for that title but because the editorial argument moves between them. The cross-medium move is the work, and it's where a pathway differs most clearly from a recommendation engine.
When the live editorial path is unavailable for a title — a novel anchor that no curator has written a pathway for yet — Aravien falls back to a pre-generated set of static seed pathways, then to a cross-reference page that tells you which pathways already lead into this work. The reader is never left at a dead end.
