handover diaspora
The 1997 handover sends a particular generation of Hong Kong filmmakers and their grammar overseas. Wong and Maggie Cheung do not relocate, but their language does — the long take, the held look, the corridor — and turns up, accented, in Sofia Coppola and Wes Anderson. The current is brief but loud. -
no wave / kosmische
Two flows in one current. Kosmische — Cluster, Neu!, Harmonia — finds American ears via Eno; no wave — DNA, Lydia Lunch — returns to Berlin transformed by the time of Earthquake Weather. The Atlantic is, briefly, a recording studio. -
anime crosses
The mid-1980s saw anime cross the Pacific not through the cinema but through the videotape. Akira, Ghost in the Shell, and a generation of cult VHS imports re-shape what a science-fiction film could look like in the West. By 2003, The Matrix is openly an anime sequel.
