The argument.

Journal is the editorial layer of the Aravien index — the part that reads it out loud. The index gathers and organizes; Journal speaks. Dispatches, reading groups, issue-by-issue thinking, and the letters that come back. If Aravien is the library, Journal is the reading desk.

Aravien began as a folder. Four people, a shared document, and a question that the people who liked culture and the people who made culture both kept asking, quietly, in slightly different words: where is the room where this is being read together?

The room we wanted didn’t seem to exist. Bookstores closed. Magazines compressed. Recommendations became, almost overnight, a thing that machines did. The literary supplement and the listening club and the late-night film review survived in pockets, but always with the air of something that had once been part of a larger room and had now become, despite itself, a kind of bunker.

We are not anti-machine. We are pro-room.

Aravien is the room. It is not a magazine, and not a journal, and not a service. It is, in the original sense of the word, an index — a careful listing of the things that are currently being held in mind, organized by region and by editor, with the assumption that an index is most useful when it has been kept by someone whose taste you have come to trust.

We file across mediums on purpose. The walls between film and literature and music are mostly the walls of the people who sell those things. The works themselves — the ones that matter — have always been in conversation across those walls, and the most interesting reading of any one of them is usually a reading that runs through several.

What follows are eight tenets. They are not rules. They are commitments we have made to each other and that we intend to keep. If you have come to Aravien from a friend, or from a letter, or from a corner of the internet that still believes in this kind of work, you are already among the room. Stay a while.
