Satrapi renders revolutionary upheaval and exile through stark monochrome animation, transforming political catastrophe into intimate biography. The animated form becomes a confession booth where the regime's violence and personal disillusionment can be spoken without flinching, mirroring Folman's belief that drawn images can hold what live action cannot.

Simon strips the Iraq invasion down to the bored, profane chatter of Marines who cannot yet name what they are doing, withholding the catharsis of meaning.
