Mind Game

Andersson stages purgatory as a series of beige tableaux in which businessmen drag crucifixes through traffic and a girl is sacrificed to revive the stock market. Like Yuasa, he treats existential rupture as visual deadpan, where the surreal and the bureaucratic collapse into a single pictorial plane.

Each hour-long fable strips a commandment to the bone of a single Warsaw housing block, where moral decision becomes a kind of metaphysical weather. Kieślowski's still observation is the inverse twin of Yuasa's kineticism, but both insist that one ordinary choice secretly reorders the cosmos.

Oskar's willed refusal to grow turns the body itself into a polemic against historical determinism, his drum a small instrument against the grand machinery of catastrophe. This grotesque insistence on personal reinvention echoes Yuasa's protagonist, who likewise weaponizes absurdity to escape an inherited fate.

Apple records dogs, cleared throats, and percussive household objects into songs that tear themselves open mid-bar to confess something more truthful. The album's structural permission to reinvent itself second by second is the sonic analogue to Yuasa's animation, which discards its own grammar each time emotion demands.

Although produced in Japan, this work's animation direction was led by Hong Kong-born Eunyoung Choi's collaborator network and its protagonist's recursive lives map directly onto Mind Game's whale-belly redemption. Each episode resets the universe to test whether selfhood is a destiny or a series of doors one keeps choosing.
