The Map of Sex and Love

This first-person documentary follows two men cataloguing the country's reaction to a civil-union bill, transforming private domesticity into a forensic survey of national prejudice. The film shares Chan's instinct that sexuality cannot be filmed without simultaneously filming the political weather pressing against the bedroom window.

Abbott's serial buries political intrigue inside the affairs of overlapping couples, using infidelity as the membrane through which state power leaks into private rooms. Like Chan, it understands that scandal is geography — a chart of who can enter whose bed, whose office, whose country.

Duras renders colonial Saigon as an erotic topography where racial hierarchy and adolescent yearning braid into a single sentence rhythm. Like Chan, she insists the colonial body cannot be undressed without exposing the colonial map underneath.

Cohen catalogues lovers with the cartographer's instinct for borders and the political prisoner's instinct for surveillance, locating each affair within a larger architecture of confinement. Chan's pathway runs through the same austere registry, where a body in a room is always also a body inside a state.

Though live-action in execution, the series was developed through extensive animatic and animated pre-visualization workflows in Wellington, building a fantastical migrant ghetto where interspecies romance becomes the chief crime against empire. The show parallels Chan's interest in eros as the place where colonial law most nakedly reveals its absurdity.
